Big Bend Two Step ORR - 2001

By Harry Butler

Thought I would tell everyone about my experience this past week end. This is sort of long, so I put the bragging up top, my ORR experiences next and then my opinions about ARRA (Myth or Truth) and how they did putting on their first event.
Short and Sweet. I had a ball, kicked some butt, and will go to any ARRA event I can fit into my schedule and budget. If anyone is thinking about doing an ORR for the first time, I would be happy to talk to you.

First, I was entered in the 125 mph class. I finished second. I was under 0.043 mph or 124.957 mph for the 118 miles and total time of 56:39.506.(target time was 56:38.400.
South Leg was run in 28:04.337 at 126.103 mph. North Leg was run in 28:35.223 at 123.832 mph. First place was under 0.035 mph or 124.965 mph.

I had a navigator and was driving a 1996 Corvette Coupe, with a LT4 engine, stock except for a 160 degree thermostat, K&N air cleaner, and Corsa exhaust. Tires are Firestone Firehawks on 9.5X17 wheels all around. You don't need a highly modified car to have a lot of fun.
Navigator does help. Even one who arrived at 1:00 AM the morning of the race and had never seen the course except for the video.

This was my third ORR. I ran BB last year in the 110 mph class. It was my first and I did not have a navigator and I finished 6th with an average speed of 110.35 mph. I then entered the Pony Express II from Austin to Battle Mountain in Nev. I ran in the 120 mph class and my daughter Stacey was my navigator. I finished 11th with an average speed of 122+ mph. Each time I have raced I have moved up in the speed I have run.
I am 64+ years old, and somewhat conservative in nature. I like Clint Eastwood's saying "You got to know your limitations". I felt very comfortable running at 125 mph class. In the race I hit 139 mph and in practice I was clocked at 141.9 mph on radar. I feel my car is capable of running in the 135 or 140 mph class and being competive. If I felt comportable with my driving, I would probably do it. I think I had as much fun as Curtis did running in the 1654 mph class. Myth and Truth
ARRA will run an unsafe race. Myth. In my opinion, ARRA ran as safe if not safer race than CARS did. Tech of the cars was much more complete and professional. Person who teched my car paid attention to more detail than I felt CARS did. All gates were manned with course workers, and the race was red flagged for a while due to a car blowing a tire. Once the course was cleared, race resumed.
Race was red flagged due to a car 'being lost' on course. A car did not pass a check point. Race was stopped until car was located. Car pulled off course on own power due to engine problems in a low spot where course workers could not see it. Race was resumed once car was located and it was determined it was safely off the course. I felt very comfortable running the race and had confidence in the ARRA people.
Unlimited cars will start last. Myth.
Faster cars started first just like BB last year and Pony II. Although I have never been to a Silver State, I'm told that unlimited cars start last there.
Practice was dangerous. Myth.
Practice was run in much the same way as the BB last year. Traffic was stopped, course swept, 10 to 12 cars run the practice course to one end, traffic let through, course swept, and cars return to start. This is repeated until all cars have practiced.
Practice was delayed on Thursday for 2 1/2 hours due to overcast and damp road. Sounds like ARRA was thinking of safety of drivers there. No one I heard complained about the delay. No one wanted to run on a damp road with poor visibility.
One of the organizers did crash his car in practice. A shock broke and he went off the road. Totaled his car, but he walked away with minor injures, and was at practice, car show and parade, drivers meeting the next day. Shit happens. I had three practice runs. 132 mph +, 126 mph + and 141 mph + on the radar. Gave me time to get use to speed again, and to drive what I think is the toughest part of the course.
Drivers meeting was not up to par. Truth
Not everything was covered at the drivers meeting. We did get a good lecture about the importance of paying attention to what your car is telling you. Bill said he heard a 'rattle' from the right front of his car. The rattle turned out to be the broken shock. At staging the next morning ARRA held another drivers meeting and went over everything that was missed at the drivers meeting the night before. They realized they made a mistake and took the action to correct it. Sounds like the type of organization that I like to be part of.
ARRA does not know how to put on a ORR Myth.
ARRA did a very good job. Again, my opinion, they were much better organized and professional than CARS. I have nothing against CARS, I will run in their events if I can and will support them as they give us a chance to have a hell of lot of fun driving our cars they way they are meant to be driven. I just felt ARRA had their act together more than the two CARS events I have attended. ARRA did thank J R and Team ZR-1 at the awards dinner for all the help J.R gave them in promoting the event.
